William Clouston: Rolls Royce and the Trabant

How can we get government to work for us?

All my life they’ve been telling me that we have a ‘Rolls Royce’ civil service. Well, we do seem to be paying for it, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be the general public which is riding in it. For us, it’s more like a Trabant.

So SDP Leader William Clouston discusses whether the problem is cultural or more specifically organizational. And what, if anything can be done about it.

The failure of our governance to address problems which are all-too-readily identifiable, and the now general reflect response to any shortfall to raise taxes/charges to choke off demand rather than raise supply to an adequate level, is surely now an urgent problem.

But it’s an urgent problem which the Conservatives nor Labour are pretending not to notice. If we are to move the country in a more social democratic direction, we can’t afford to ignore this governmental dysfunction, and the exorbitant costs we’re all paying for failure.
