Tales from the Riverbank

Simon Cooper, uber-gillie, and head of Fishing Breaks, on our water troubles

Simon Cooper probably knows more about how English rivers live and die than any Englishman alive, since his company Fishing Breaks depends entirely on the health of our chalk streams and their fishy inhabitants. He is therefore in pole-position to assess where our water-industry and its regulation has gone wrong. And, to my surprise, where it has succeeded.

So we talk about drought, about water abstraction, about artesian wells, reservoirs, potential Schemes of Control mechanisms and about beavers. He is particularly robust about beavers. It’s always a privilege to chat with experts in their field, and I hope you enjoy it.
