Wayne on What It Takes

It was a long march, but Wayne Dixon won political power because his Leeds neighbours needed it

In May this year, Wayne Dixon secured his place in British electoral history when as SDP candidate he won a landslide victory in the tough Middleton Park ward, to take a seat on Leeds City Council. The Yorkshire Post described it as “one of the most shocking local election results the city has ever seen.”

Maybe, but Wayne’s victory was no flash in the pan: it was something which grew out of a sustained and determined practice of community service to help one of the tougher, and bigger (26k population) wards in Leeds. This is Wayne, on housing, policing, politics and more.
